You can't blame them for trying

The statistics concerning the number of people who lie when they apply for jobs can sometimes be shocking. Many suggest that the majority of candidates are dishonest in some way.

Such behaviour is clearly wrong and it can have extremely negative consequences for companies who take such people on. However, it is not hard to see why applicants feel the need to embellish their histories, omit facts and sometimes outright fib when they are putting together their CVs and are going through the interview process.

After all, the jobs market is more competitive now than it has been for many years and there are a lot of people seeking a relatively small number of roles.

In one sense, this is good news for you as an employer, as it means you will be able to choose from a wide pool of individuals when you advertise roles within your organisation. However, you must be on your guard against falsities presented to you by hopefuls.

Those most likely to embellish their skills and experience may be people starting out in their careers. At present, the number of young individuals aged between 16 and 24 who are out of work or training is exceptionally high and many of these people feel hopeless about their prospects.

Therefore, when an opportunity presents itself, many may feel compelled to impress employers by lying.

But while you might be able to understand the plight of these people, it is vital you protect yourself against such actions by using employment screening services such as those provided by us here at People Checking. We specialise in things like reference checks and education verification.
