The most obvious are those jobs where the worker will be in contact with children even in a limited and supervised capacity. Workers in most sport centres, for example, must pass at least a standard CRB check. So do teachers, museum guides, park wardens, and other people who may come into contact with children over the course of their normal employment.
Anyone working with vulnerable adults should also have a criminal records check before starting work. That includes any position that involves caring for or being in contact with the elderly and the severely disabled. Any job that requires close or unsupervised contact with children or vulnerable adults also requires an enhanced criminal records check, not just the standard one.
Volunteers are also included in the provisions, which means that before taking on any volunteer to act in a role that involves kids’ sports teams, for example, an enhanced CRB check still needs to be made even if the volunteer is only part time or temporary.
Positions in banks and the financial sector may or may not legally require a CRB check, although we certainly recommend it anyway. At the very least a credit check is the standard. A full financial health check is a better idea, so you find out about any financial problems on the horizon before there is the potential for them to cause your business harm. It also means you can be sure the candidate acts in a financially responsible way in their own affairs.
