What The Detailed Passport Check Involves

The passport check is one of the key pieces in the pre employment screening puzzle.

It is executed for two reasons: to make sure the candidate has the legal right to work in the UK and in your industry, and to make sure they are who they say they are.

To begin with the passport is authenticated. We ensure it is the genuine article and that it isn’t a match with any that have been stolen or reported missing. Most countries now issue machine readable identity documents, so the initial passport check is made with a scanner and a dedicated software package. The process also provides solid proof that the passport check has been made in case problems do arise in the future. The passport number is checked with our software, so you know it belongs to a UK resident with the correct legal rights to work in the job on offer.

Depending on the status of the candidate, which we’ll get through their passport number, you may need to see and check other documents like a Home Office registration card or a work permit. If you don’t already have those, we can tell you what’s missing.

In addition to standard pre employment screening we can also cross-check your existing pool of employees to let you know if records any of those other official documents are missing for someone already in your employ. That way you can ask for them to be provided for scrutiny and recorded, and can be confident you’ve made all the necessary background checks.
