The Right to Drive
The right to drive on the public highways is something that has to be earned. The reason we have driving tests and theory tests is to ensure a fairly basic level of understanding of the roads, and the laws which govern these.
Without these rules and laws, we would have chaos on the roads. People would drive how they want without any regard for their safety and the safety of others. In a decent and civilised society, we simply can’t afford to go without some way of controlling traffic on the roads.
The right to drive can simply be summarised as a driver’s licence. Without this, people are legally not allowed on the road. When so many jobs depend on being able to drive, it’s no wonder that some people are so willing to lie about their ability to drive. Some people believe that if the difference between getting a job and not getting a job is simply a matter of lying about the fact they don’t have a driving licence, then this is perfectly justified in their eyes.
The simple fact is that this isn’t the case. People driving on the roads without a driving licence are a huge liability for businesses. If someone without a driving licence has an accident whilst in a company vehicle, then the company is liable for all damages. With this in mind, companies must ensure that they
carry out driving licence checks before hiring someone to drive a company vehicle.
These driver licence checks will verify that an employee is eligible to drive on the road, and they minimise any potential risk to both themselves, the business and to other people.
