The reason for all these checks simply boils down to the fact that employers want to make sure that a potential candidate is as good on paper as they claim to be. The checks mentioned above ensure that candidates are not lying on their CVs and do have the relevant qualifications and experience that they claim to have.
One area of job applications that can often cause contention is references. Employers will seek references from potential applicants as they are a good indication of how well the person worked in their last job, what they are like to work with and often what they are like as a person. They give more of an illustration of how the potential employee acts in a work environment, something which is almost impossible to ascertain from a CV.
Unfortunately, people can often get unsuitable people to provide references. If the potential employee didn’t get on well with their last manager then it’s unlikely that they would provide a reference. If this is the case then the potential employee may request that a friend or colleague provide them with a reference. This is not a legitimate reference as it should come from the line manager. Fortunately, reference checks are available from PeopleChecking to ensure that the reference is accurate and from a valid source.
