The Cost of Responsibility
Pre employment screening is big business these days. Companies are becoming more and more selective when it comes to hiring new staff. This means that more background checks, passport checking and criminal records checks are being carried out by companies
These help to ensure that the potential employee is everything they claim to be and will prove whether or not they may be being untruthful on their CV.
The general rule of
pre-employment screening is that the more important the position, the more checks that should be carried out. However, this isn’t always the case. Some people may feel that the work a social worker carries out requires a more trustworthy person than someone who works in a clothes shop. Both these positions require the employee to be trustworthy. The only difference is that one has to be trusted with money and the other has to be trusted with vulnerable people. For an employer, the important thing is to be able to trust an employee no matter what their position.
Obviously, the importance of a job is a decision for both the employer but also a personal judgement as well. As an employer, they will carry out more
background checks on an individual if the job has a high level of responsibility and the salary to go with it. As an individual, we may not see this position as being important. However, our judgements are often down to personal circumstances and are almost irrelevant when it comes to the employment process.
