New year, new opportunities

There are certain times of the year, such as Christmas, that provide a great opportunity for both employers and employees.

For most employers, particularly those in the retail market, business increases dramatically as the festive season approaches. The general reason for this is that people buy more presents and food, and the volume of letters and packages delivered increases.

For potential employees, this increased business generally provides extra employment opportunities. The number of additional Christmas staff required only seems to increase every year.

Some employers may feel it is ok to employ these temporary staff without any sort of background check or criminal records check. They may feel that those staff will not be there long enough to cause any problems. However, some temporary jobs can often turn into permanent positions for the right person. If someone with a questionable history performs well during the term of their contract, employers may be tempted to keep them on without knowing their full history. This could potentially be dangerous as an employee feels more settled and may feel that they can get away with more.

Employers should always look to carry out criminal background checks such as those available from People Checking. The duration of employment is irrelevant. Employers should ensure that employees are honest and trustworthy, especially when working in positions which require the handling of money. Even if an employer doesn’t wish to perform these checks on temporary staff, it would be wise to carry them out when making someone a permanent employee.
