In theory, people should be queuing up at the doors of employers, desperately seeking to fill any available positions. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.
As the economy starts to recover, more and more vacancies are becoming available. Unfortunately, due to changes in employment patterns, these positions aren’t always as easy to fill as they should be. Young people who would previously have filled these roles are no longer doing this; the reason being that the economic downturn and previous lack of available work lead to record numbers of young people applying for college and university courses. These courses typically require a commitment of two or three years and therefore we’re now experiencing a time where there aren’t enough suitable candidates to fill the vacancies.
Whilst it is always good to seek further education and qualifications, some employers also value enthusiastic workers who are prepared to work their way up through the company. Starting at the bottom shows a willingness to learn and an enthusiasm for work hard.
From an employer’s perspective, it is very important that any gaps in education or employment history are very short. Employers will look to carry out employment checks and education verification checks such as those available from People Checking. These checks will quickly identify an applicant’s work history, indicating any dates of unemployment or time out of education which could prove tricky to explain for the applicant.
