Necessary Criminal Record Checks

If you're hiring new staff, you're probably considering all of the background checks that you'll need to perform.

One of the options will be a criminal records check, but is it really that necessary?

A lot of the time, yes. Criminal record checks are often vital to make sure that the candidate hasn't failed to disclose any previous convictions, and with a lot of people altering their CVs these days that's a very real possibility. Many feel that if they're truthful they won't get the job, and while that could happen they certainly won't get it if they lie.

It's even more important to check a person's criminal background if they're to be working with material, or indeed people, of a sensitive or vulnerable nature. You don't want to hire someone only to find that they have a violent or criminal history, so it always pays to check.

By not undertaking CRB checks you're leaving yourself open to severe financial consequences. Hiring people is an incredibly expensive business, and having to let them go later on down the line wastes an awful lot of money. Then think about the fact that if they've stolen things or have been involved in fraud before then they could well be again, so always check their background to protect your financial interests.

So, in a nutshell, criminal records checks really are necessary. They protect not only yourself but also other employees and customers, and makes sure that you haven't wasted money by hiring unsuitable candidates. Never overlook it, and always include it as one of your most important background checks before employing someone.
