Always There

Criminal records are something that can stay with a person for years. A criminal record can affect the offender's life for many years to come when it comes to finding a job.

Most companies will endeavour to carry out a criminal records check such as those available from PeopleChecking before even considering a person for a position in their company. This CRB check will highlight any past convictions no matter how small they may be.

Most application forms for jobs now have a section regarding the declaration of criminal activity. Some will ask for all convictions and some will ask for those which are not spent. It’s vitally important for the person applying for the job to be honest in this section, because if an employer later finds that an employee has withheld information about a previous conviction, or has in some way misled them, then they are within their rights to dismiss the employee.

Even though certain crimes are considered spent after a certain period, when applying for some jobs, this does not matter. If you have a criminal record and then apply to work with children or vulnerable people then all criminal activity will be highlighted on a CRB check. Even the smallest of misdemeanours committed 50 years ago will be picked up on. This is to ensure that people working with vulnerable groups are as law abiding as possible. Any person in a position of such responsibility needs to be as trustworthy as is humanly possible.
